we turned our back on a world gone mad
unable to face the greed and pitiful lies
we left our bodies tripping to the Grateful Dead
and some acoustic funeral for lovers in limbo
having a rapport with love and harmony

running from the caskets of forgotten wars
unable to see the killings and more lies
we discovered our soul with Axis, Bold As Love
beneath the Avalon Ballroom for dancers in love
revealing self, intimacy and personal feelings

burnt from the flames of unforgiving gods
unable to shed the tears from screaming lies
we searched for our mind with O leery
at the Fillmore dancing with Janis and the gypsies
mutually developing a reliance on each other

scared to death by another sense of sensibility
unable to conform to truth blessed with shame
we saw colors of rainbows and flowers
under the Golden Gate with nude Diggers
fulfilling our needs riding the love wheel

Wayne, oh the true hippie generation I missed by a couple of years. Strict parents and all that goes along with that. Thanks for the journey.

I found hippies to be very very conformist, and very intolerant of those who didn't uphold their different from any other established group really. They made some good music, and contributed to some innovative environmental concepts. The constant dope smoking was non productive but at least they were non aggressive which in retrospect I think was a good thing. I think some of these 'poets' could be well served by puffing on a few joints and remove the rifles stuck up their arses.

WOW.....this could be an all day debate....there were "hippies"... which is a totally over used and generalized word... and there was many of us who who were students...poets...artists against violence...the war...for womens rights..civil speech..and on an on....I can not understand or relate to a comment like this

What beautifully descriptive phrasing. A fine job writing that slice of life - it feels like it could come 'round again.

THANKS for reading Tumblewords.....this is a LOVE poem...using the ... "wheel theory of love" Rapport...Self Revelation...Mutual Dependance..and Fulfillment... and I just used these in my 4 stanzas....This is JUST a poem...NOT social comment on the 60s or "hippies"....Im glad you took it the way you did.....thanks you

Been there done that have the blown mind to remember it by--but seriously, this brings back LOTS of memories of the Avalon and the Fillmore--dancing on stage with the dead, hanging out at the home of Janis Joplin in the woods in CA, cool.

There were of course some conformist aspects of hippiedom, but when I look back at my pictures from that time, we were all quite different even though we lived in Haight Ashbury and so on. I was a poet then, too. :-D

I like the idea of tripping on the love wheel, Wayne. :)

Sounds like you're contemporaneous with me, Wayne, although you were West Coast and I was Swinging London. It's amazing how the cultural undertow and general atmosphere of those times still influence things today.

It's not easy to stay sane in these crazy times.

This was really a fascinating read, and such a window into that time, a time when so many felt they could make a true change in the world...

Your imagery is wonderful...I could almost reach out and touch it. The pictures came clearly into my mind as I read each stanza.
